DAL Mavericks -8.5DAL Mavericks @ WAS Wizards
Dallas is looking to add another road win on their final road trip of the season. The Mavericks looked pretty good while winning at playoff-bound Cleveland, so Washington should not give them too much trouble. Spencer Dinwiddie missed the last game against the Cavs, but he is not on the injury list for this game against his former team. He certainly has enjoyed being in a winning atmosphere, even though it has not done as much for Davis Bertans — who accompanied him in the trade for Kristaps Porzingis.
Porzingis has been better in Washington, too, but it is all empty calories kind of stuff. With the players the Wizards have right now, he is definitely the first option — but we will have to see how he meshes with Bradley Beal next season. Washington has nothing to play for and that can make it a little dangerous, especially at home (where the Wiz are 20-19 SU). Washington has won 2 of its last 3 at home and 3 of 4 overall. The Wizards have not been successful against good teams, however.
Dallas should win this game easily and there may be a little intensity due to the fact that these teams were recent trade partners. Luka Doncic has been amazing for the Mavs in the second half of the season and I don’t see how the Wizards are going to slow him down. This game could get a little loose and that favors, Dallas too; the Mavs have more weapons they can use against a light Washington defense. Take Dallas.
TOR Raptors -10.5TOR Raptors @ ORL Magic
The Toronto Raptors are in a great position to avoid a play-in game, but need to avoid slipping up against opponents like the Orlando Magic tonight. Luckily for them they have nearly a clean bill of health, with only sophomore guard Malachi Flynn likely to be out. They are also on a good run of form, winning their last 4 and 8 of their last 10 overall. Only the Charlotte Hornets have as many wins over the last 10 in the Eastern Conference. The hosts’ form has been more disappointing, with the Magic on a 4-game losing streak. They could also be without Wendell Carter Jr., who is dealing with a sprained wrist. Without him, the hosts could be giving up the only clear advantage they had over the Raptors.
Over the last 10 games the Raptors are 3rd in the league in defensive rating. Their perimeter defenders such as OG Anunoby have the skillset to cause real issues for rookie Franz Wagner. During that time the Magic rank last in the NBA in offensive rating. In their current winning streak the Raptors have held 3 opponents under 105 points and tonight should be more of the same, especially if Carter Jr. cannot play for the hosts. The Raptors are 9th in the league during that time in offensive rating, which should mean a disappointing night for the Magic will likely see the visitors covering the spread.
IND Pacers +15.0IND Pacers @ BOS Celtics
Indiana is a bad team playing out the string. The Pacers have lost 5 games in a row and with just 5 more left on the schedule they might not get another win this season. They did cover in their last game against Denver, but that is a small measure of success. They were outscored by nearly 30 points in the first quarter of that game, and that was at home. To be competitive they have to be focused on getting off to better starts. It is tough when you don’t have 5 NBA-caliber players to put in your lineup, though. Boston has lost 2 straight games. The first was at Toronto, a game that Jayson Tatum, Jaylon Brown and Al Horford all missed. They fought hard but fell short in overtime. All of those players were back for the latest loss though, at home against Miami. Those games do not invalidate the great work Boston has done over the last couple of months but it has to be of some concern. Indiana is the perfect light opponent for them to get back on track against.
This is a massive number. When the Celtics were going well they were dominating teams, both good and bad but the loss of Robert Williams really hurt their top-rated defense and the team is scuffling right now. I would be shocked if they suffered an upset loss, but a small play on the Pacers, who can at least play nice and loose makes more sense, even though I am not a fan of backing bad teams just because of big numbers. Take Indiana.
DET Pistons -5.0DET Pistons @ OKC Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder (22-54) will host the Detroit Pistons (21-56) following their 136-118 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. The Thunder have failed to win consecutive games since early February and have now lost 8 of their last 10 games. Oklahoma City’s offense ranks dead last in offensive efficiency and has had 5 different players lead the team in scoring in its last 6 games. To add insult to injury, their 18th-ranked defense ranks within the bottom 5 teams of the league in their last 3 games and the Thunder will continue to play without Darius Bazley, Luguentz Dort, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Derrick Favors, Ty Jerome, Tre Mann, Mike Muscala, and Kenrich Williams.
The visiting Pistons won 102-94 against the Philadelphia 76ers last night as 10-point underdogs. Though the Pistons were able to snap a 3-game losing streak, they have still lost 7 of their last 10 games. Rookie Cade Cunningham has led the team in scoring in their last 2 games and is averaging 30.5 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals in that span. Detroit ranks within the bottom 3 teams in offensive efficiency and in the bottom 10 teams in defensive efficiency. In their lone meeting of the season, the Thunder defeated the Pistons 114-103 on the road. With that being said, only 2 of the Thunder players who played in that game are available for them tonight, and they combined for just 4 points. Take the Pistons to cover tonight’s spread on the road.
LA Clippers +8.5LA Clippers @ MIL Bucks
The Clippers suffered their 6th loss in 7 games last night in Chicago as the Bulls beat them 135-130 after overtime. Luckily for them, their playoff seeding is already pretty much decided, so the importance of that game and the remaining 5 isn’t all that high. Paul George had a decent game with 22 points, his 2nd appearance since returning from an elbow injury. However, what should worry Clippers fans is that George’s matchup for the night, DeMar DeRozan, dropped 50 on him in the loss. LA is now 1-6 ATS in the last 7 games, and against the Bucks they’ve won just once in 7 visits to Fiserv Forum.
Just like the Clippers, Milwaukee is coming off an overtime game on the road, but they were able to pull one out against the Brooklyn Nets, winning 120-119 in another statement game for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak finished with 44 points and 14 rebounds, making another strong case for MVP honors. His team is now 2nd in the Eastern Conference standings, just a half-game behind the Miami Heat. The Bucks have won 12 of their last 15 games, and they’ve covered in 10 of their last 13 overall. With both teams coming off OT games in what will be the 2nd night of back-to-backs, fatigue could be a factor too. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the big-name players are rested, which could result in a close contest. I’m going to give the Clippers the benefit of the doubt. Take them to at least keep this one within single digits.
PHX Suns -7.5PHX Suns @ MEM Grizzlies
Two teams riding big winning streaks clash in Memphis as the Grizzlies host the Phoenix Suns. Memphis, on a 6-game winning run, all without Ja Morant, has locked up the #2 seed out West, but the Suns, who have won 9 in a row, own the top spot in the conference. This is also a matchup between the top 2 scoring teams in the NBA. Again, the Grizzlies won’t have Ja Morant for this game, but they are 19-2 straight up without him and currently on a 9-game win streak when he doesn’t play. Memphis may be very short-handed for this game as Desmond Bane, Jaron Jackson Jr., Steven Adams and Tyus Jones are all listed as doubtful.
Memphis is the best cover team in the NBA this season, posting a 50-27 record against the spread. The Grizzlies are also 25-13 ATS at home and 17-9 against the number as an underdog. The Suns are a whopping 55-10 straight up as a favorite this season and 23-14 ATS on the road. This feels like a lot of points for the Grizzlies to be getting and the trends back that, but the injury situation may be too much for them to overcome, even though the Suns may be resting players too. There’s too much injury variance to make this bet with a lot of confidence, but take the Suns.
SAC Kings -2.5SAC Kings @ HOU Rockets
The Houston Rockets (20-57) will host the Sacramento Kings (28-49) following their 121-118 loss to the Kings on Wednesday. The Rockets enter tonight’s game on a 2-game losing streak and have lost 7 of their last 10 games. Rookie Jalen Green has led the team in scoring in 3 of their last 4 games and is averaging 27.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2 assists while shooting 46% or better from the field and from 3-point range in that stretch. Houston ranks within the bottom 4 teams in both offensive and defensive efficiency.
The visiting Kings were able to win the first meeting of their back-to-back against the Rockets thanks to the continued stellar play of rookie Davion Mitchell as well as a career-high 24 points from center Damian Jones. Mitchell has led the team in scoring and assists in 4 of their last 5 games and is averaging 24 points, 8.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds in that span. The Kings rookie is also extended his record as the only rookie in the Sacramento era to record 20+ points and 7+ assists in 5 consecutive games. The Kings are now 2-1 against the Rockets this season with an opportunity to win 4 of their last 5 games on the road. With D’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis deactivated for the season, Mitchell has sprouted into a dependable NBA guard. Kevin Porter Jr., and Green dropped 30 and 32 points respectively, but the Rockets still fell short. Look for the Kings to improve their defensive approach to Houston’s starting backcourt and cover tonight’s spread.
SA Spurs -15.0POR Trail Blazers @ SA Spurs
The Portland Trail Blazers have had a terrible time playing the San Antonio Spurs this season, losing their games by 31 and 37-point margins. They have an extensive injury report which makes a similar result very likely tonight. The Blazers are on a 5-game losing streak, with 3 of those losses coming by margins of 15 or more points. It is also worth noting that only the Houston Rockets have fewer road wins in the Western Conference this season. The Spurs, on the other hand, have won 5 of their last 7 games, keeping their hopes of making the play-in game alive. They need to win tonight in order to keep the pressure on the Los Angeles Lakers. Without any key injuries, they should have a great chance of doing just that.
The Trail Blazers have failed to score more than 96 points against the Spurs this season, and tonight should be more of the same. Over the last 5 games the hosts are 6th in defensive rating. The visitors are 29th on the offensive side of things. That combination should result in another low-scoring performance for the short-handed Trail Blazers. With the Spurs 7th in offensive rating during that same time, they should have no trouble reaching the 110-point mark, having done so in 4 of their last 5 games. Doing that will give them a great chance of covering.
MIN Timberwolves +3.5MIN Timberwolves @ DEN Nuggets
The Minnesota Timberwolves have lost 4 of their last 5 games and badly need a win as they finish their season series with the Nuggets in Denver. The Timberwolves can’t finish any worse than 7th in the Western Conference, but are just 2.5 games behind the Utah Jazz for the 6th seed. Minnesota’s next 3 games are all against teams below .500, before they close out the season against Chicago. The Nuggets come in on a 3-game winning streak and have won 4 of their last 5. Over the last 10 games, the offensive and defensive numbers for these teams are nearly identical. Both are averaging more than 118 points per game and just over 43 rebounds per game. Defensively, they are each allowing more than 117 points per game over their last 10.
The Nuggets are 14-23 against the spread at home this season. Meanwhile the Timberwolves have gone 10-5-1 ATS over their last 16 games. All 5 of those ATS losses were also straight up losses. This is a short number at home and the public will likely settle on Denver at home against a Timberwolves team that looks to be fading down the stretch. It’s hard to bet against Nikola Jokic at home, but the Minnesota offense is deeper and healthier. Take Minnesota to cover, and have a money-line sprinkle as well.
LA Lakers +2.0NO Pelicans @ LA Lakers
With 3 wins in their last 4 games, the Pelicans enter tonight’s game in a really good spot. They are 2 games ahead of the Spurs and Lakers in the 9th seed, so even if they lose tonight’s game they still have a pretty solid chance of finishing in the Play-In Tournament. They’ve already beaten the Lakers twice this season, most recently just 4 days ago, 116-108 at home. Brandon Ingram had 26 points in that game and was a major factor in the Pelicans’ 20-point comeback win. In the 2nd half of that game the Pelicans outscored LA 67-39, so there’s a ton of optimism within their ranks as they head into this game.
This is the moment of truth for the Lakers. With just 6 games left they have to string together a solid run in order to get into the Play-In Tournament. The Spurs are ahead of them as they own the tiebreaker, so they’ll have to hope for a slip-up on their end as well. Anthony Davis returns to the lineup after a lengthy layoff, and LeBron James is also expected back, so the Lakers are at full strength for the first time in a while. They’ve lost 4 straight, but what’s encouraging is the recent play of Russell Westbrook, who is averaging 22.1 points per game on 52% shooting over his last 7 games. Getting AD back makes all the difference for the Lakers. LeBron should be fully fresh after missing the last 2 games, and they led by as many as 23 points in that game on Sunday, but just couldn’t hold on. I’m expecting more out of them at home tonight, so back them with confidence.
