PHX Suns WinPHX Suns @ PHI 76ers
Just a game after scoring 11 points vs Washington, Devin Booker bounced back with 38 last night as the Suns took care of business on the road in Chicago. Their defense didn’t have the best of nights, as they allowed 75 points in the final 24 minutes of play, but all 5 starters scored in double-figures — which was enough in the end to get the win. The Suns enter tonight’s game as underdogs despite winning 10 of their last 11 games on the road. They have also covered the spread in 12 of their last 18 against Philadelphia.
The 76ers are also coming off a 119-108 road win at Chicago, where there was no stopping Joel Embiid. He dropped 40 points and grabbed 10 boards. Tobias Harris also contributed with 23 points and 8 rebounds for the Sixers, who are 6-2 SU in their last 8 games. This team has been reliable at home lately, winning 4 of its last 5 games, but it hasn’t been overly convincing in covering the spread with a 10-15 ATS record in 25 games at Wells Fargo Center.
Phoenix is on a 4-game win streak in head-to-head meetings. In their last 2 visits to Philadelphia the Suns have won by 3 and 13 points. They are 16-10 ATS on the road this season and have won 21 of 26 — the best mark in the NBA. Go with the road team to win.
BOS Celtics Win -7.5BOS Celtics @ BKN Nets
On Tuesday, the Boston Celtics will travel to the Barclays Center to take on the Brooklyn Nets. Entering play, the Celtics have won five consecutive contests–having outscored their opponents by 18.1 points per 100 possessions in that span. In that same time period, the Nets are winless, having been outscored by 13.3 points per 100 possessions. This evening, Boston is near full strength, with only depth pieces on the injury report. Brooklyn has already ruled out LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Joe Harris. Nic Claxton and James Harden remain listed as questionable.
Per Cleaning the Glass, when Durant, Irving, and Aldridge are off of the floor at the same time this year, Brooklyn ranks in the 43rd percentile in offensive efficiency and the 44th percentile in defensive efficiency. If we add Harden to the list of missing names, Brooklyn plummets to the 14th percentile in offensive efficiency.
Though both of these teams are well-recognized title contenders, this is not a fair fight in this matchup. Boston is one of the hottest teams in the NBA, battling a Brooklyn roster that is decimated from top to bottom. The spread is already running on this contest. It is doubtful that it will get large enough to warrant backing the Nets.
ATL Hawks -9.0IND Pacers @ ATL Hawks
Two teams looking to snap small losing streaks are meeting in Atlanta Tuesday night. The Hawks have lost two in a row, while the Pacers are losers of three straight. Atlanta had covered 7 straight but has only covered one of their last four. Indiana has only covered two of its last eight. The Hawks offense has been surging as of late scoring 114 points per game over their last 10 games. The Pacers, who are 8-26 SU in Eastern Conference play, have taken a major hit to their offense losing nearly 20 points per game from Caris LeVert after he was traded away to Cleveland.
Motivation is a huge factor here for the Hawks. They have lost two straight on the road and need to go 4-1 in their next five games to be at .500 by the all-star break. The Pacers look like they have cashed in their chips after the LeVert trade and are just 11-22-1 (33%) ATS against the Eastern Conference. Atlanta should rebound after a poor offensive showing in its last game against Dallas. I’ll lay the points with Atlanta.
NO Pelicans Win -8.5HOU Rockets @ NO Pelicans
These teams just played in Houston with the Pelicans winning 120-107. That is no surprise given Houston’s play this season. Both of these teams are expected to be involved in trade talks so pay attention in case anyone is held out of a game, especially for Houston — which truly has nothing to play for. Veteran guard Eric Gordon is questionable with a heel injury and he is probably the Rockets’ best trade chip. They are mixing things up right now to see how rookie center Alperen Sengun fits up front with Christian Wood.
New Orleans might still be in the hunt this season due to the play-in tournament, but this is looking like another lost year of the Zion Williamson era. The Pelicans have won their last 3 games, but those were all on the road and that is just the second time they have won that many in a row this season. Brandon Ingram scored 33 points with 12 assists in the last game against Houston. Is really that good or is he just piling up stats because he takes all the shots for a bad team?
It has not been a good season for the Pelicans; they are just not better than many teams. At least they are beating the opponents they are supposed to, though. When they are home favorites they are 5-1 SU/ATS this season, and Houston is definitely in the underdog category. The only hesitation is that the Pels have not been favored by this many points in a game throughout the 2021-22 campaign. Take New Orleans.
MEM Grizzlies -7.0LA Clippers @ MEM Grizzlies
Game one with Norman Powell and Robert Covington did not work out the way it was expected for the Clippers. L.A. lost by 24 and gave up 137 points to Milwaukee at home and things are not going to get much easier with a trip to Memphis. Powell came off the bench to score 28 points and Covington scored 13. Both of those guys probably deserve to start moving forward and they will need them to play well until Paul George gets back in the lineup.
The Grizzlies are back home off of a 2-1 road trip. It could have been a perfect 3-0, too, but they lost to Philadelphia in overtime. Even though they are playing without starter Dillon Brooks, they are not missing a beat. Lately they have been going with super skinny rookie Ziaire Williams in the starting lineup and he has been producing — 5 games in the last 8 with 10+ points. That is just adding to their depth, which can only help.
The Grizzlies are the better team. One exciting dynamic of the Grizzlies’ success this season is how well they are playing as favorites; they are not just sneaking up on people. Memphis is 19-12 ATS as a favorite and even with reinforcements the Clippers are just not that hard to play against right now. I don’t expect the Grizzlies to rough them up like the Bucks just did, but it might not be far off. Take Memphis.
DET Pistons +11.5DET Pistons @ DAL Mavericks
The Detroit Pistons currently find themselves on a 4-game losing streak, but they have not been embarrassed in any of those games. In fact, over the last 10 games they have only lost by a margin of 12 or more points on 2 occasions. The team has been helped by the return of Jerami Grant who is the teams leading scorer and one of their top perimeter defenders. Cade Cunningham could be available for them tonight too as he seems like a game-time decision after missing the last 3 games. Tonight, they will visit a Dallas Mavericks team that is not in top health. They will be without key contributors in Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Maxi Kleber. With the Grant back in the fold, the Pistons could keep Luka Doncic and the rest of the Mavericks offense in check tonight.
Outside of Doncic, the Mavericks will rely heavily on Jalen Brunson to help initiate the offense. The Pistons do have great size that they can put on him to help slow him down. Of players to play at least 10 games for the Pistons, Rodney McGruder has the best defensive rating on the team. He can be a very physical presence on the perimeter which should help keep Brunson from easily getting himself in the paint. On the interior they will also have the services of Isiah Stewart who should be able to provide strong help defense for the visitors. As a result, the Pistons could have the tools to stop the Mavericks from blowing them out.
DEN Nuggets Win -6.5NY Knicks @ DEN Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets (29-24) will host the New York Knicks (24-30) following their 124-104 home win over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday night. The Nuggets improved to 12-8 since the start of the new year, and were able to snap a 3-game losing streak with Sunday’s win. Reigning MVP Nikola Jokic hasn’t skipped a beat this season and has carried the Nuggets to the 6th seed in the Western Conference while averaging a 24.0 point, 12.6 rebound, and 10.4 assist triple-double in his last 5 games. The visiting Knicks are coming off a 113-104 road loss to the Utah Jazz last night. The Knicks have now lost their last 3 games by an average margin of 9.3 points and have dropped to 7-11 since the start of the new year. The Knicks have had 4 separate players lead the team in scoring in their last 5 games with Julius Randle being the scoring leader in yesterday’s loss with 30 points while Mitchell Robinson tied a career-high 21 rebounds along with 19 points, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.
The Knicks are plummeting towards all-star weekend. They do not have a single all-star representing their team, and Julius Randle has been at the forefront of trade talks involving the Knicks. Randle has also shown a clear disregard for certain members of the player development staff as well as recently unfollowing the team on social media. A wild fact to consider for tonight’s game is that the Nuggets have won their last 8 games versus the Knicks. A wilder fact? The Nuggets have won by an average margin of 16.9 points in that span. How about the wildest fact? The Knicks haven’t won in Denver since the 2006-2007 season, when Jamal Crawford led the team with 35 points. Take the Nuggets to cover.
MIL Bucks -4.5MIL Bucks @ LA Lakers
With 7 wins over their last 9 games, the Milwaukee Bucks are once again building momentum as we approach the halfway point of the regular season. Their last 4 wins have been by an average of 20.5 points; granted it’s not against top teams, but still impressive nevertheless. In their last 2 games they scored 137 on the Blazers and Clippers, so it’s hard to find any flaws in their game at the moment. They also have a superior record in head-to-head meetings with the Lakers, beating them in 8 of the last 10 — plus in the last 9 against them the Bucks have covered the spread 6 times.
The Lakers have shown a lot of improvement since Anthony Davis returned to the lineup, but they still needed overtime to take care of the mediocre Knicks at home in their last game. That was with both Davis and LeBron James in the lineup, too. The King returned after a 5-game absence and notched a triple-double, while AD put up his usual 28 points and 17 rebounds. Malik Monk also had 29, but the story once again was Russell Westbrook — who finished the game with just 5 points and 1-for-10 shooting. Westbrook even got booed by the home fans at one point, so it will be interesting to see if he is still on the Lakers roster after Thursday’s trade deadline.
On paper the Bucks are far superior; they have gone 15-12 SU on the road this season and have covered the spread in 14 of 27 games. They are also 31-13 SU as favorites, while the Lakers have only 5 wins in 20 games as underdogs. Go with the Greek Freak and company to get one on the road.
ORL Magic +1.0ORL Magic @ POR Trail Blazers
Two struggling teams meet in Portland on Tuesday night as the Magic hit the road to take on the Trail Blazers. Despite having fewer wins than their opponent, Orlando is much more capable of winning this game given the recent trades by Portland. Over the past week, the Trail Blazers have traded Norman Powell, Robert Covington, and most recently CJ McCollum, who make up a significant amount of the production in Portland’s lineup. Not only does this signal Portland’s plans for the future as they begin unloading their valuable trade assets, but they will also have an extremely difficult time winning games for the rest of the current season, especially in Damian Lillard’s ongoing absence. The Magic are the worst team in the Eastern Conference and have no strengths on either side of the floor, however given Portland’s recent trades, the visitors might be at an advantage in this game. The Blazers are now down their top 3 leading scorers and that will be an extremely tough challenge to overcome even against one of the league’s worst teams. In addition, the team might also feel deflated after losing several key pieces of the team, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Blazers struggle in the next couple games. The Magic are a young team and have the benefit of playing a dysfunctional Portland team in tonight’s matchup, so the visitors have the edge.
