DET Pistons +4.5DET Pistons @ WAS Wizards : Detroit won a rare road game (in OT) at Charlotte over the weekend. The Pistons have won 3 of their last 4 games and they are playing as well as they have all season. In the win, we were able to see how the trio of Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, and Jerami Grant might work together. Grant was a popular trade candidate but was tough to move because he was hurt. He may fit better in a secondary role even though he might not see it that way. Washington has a lot more wins that Detroit now, but by the end of the season the teams might be pretty close. Washington is playing without Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis, their best players. Without them, the Wizards are left with a roster of role players and that can only take them so far. They have lost both of their games since the break, a high-scoring game against San Antonio and a low-scoring game against Cleveland. There is no identity to this group right now.
If this game was played a couple of months ago Washington would be an easy favorite to back at home. As things stand today the Pistons are a really good value on the road. That might be tough to wrap your head around when you look at the records of these teams but they are probably about even right now. Washington has a bit more experience but no player like Cunningham on the roster right now. Getting the points is the key for the Pistons who are playing well. Take Detroit.
BOS Celtics -5.5ATL Hawks @ BOS Celtics : Atlanta has split its 2 games since the all-star break, winning at home against Toronto and losing on the road against Chicago. At times the Hawks look a lot like the team that went to the Eastern Conference Finals last season but it doesn’t happen often enough, and consistency has been their challenge. This is going to be a tough matchup for the Hawks too, because the Celtics have a lot of defenders who can be effective in limiting Trae Young. With forward John Collins still out they are much easier to defend right now.
Boston was one of the best teams in the NBA in February. They were sneaky in getting rangy guard Derrick White at the trade deadline as he is a versatile defender who can score. Since getting him they are 5-2 SU. Look for White and Marcus Smart to make things difficult for Young tonight. He also does not take away any shots from the duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylon Brown, who are operating at a high level. That is key too. Fitting him in has been easy. Boston is hoping March can look a lot like February and they can continue to ascend in the East. This is a good game for them to get the month off to a good start. These teams have met twice this season, with each team winning and covering at home. I expect that pattern to continue tonight. Boston was able to get Young to have an inefficient game in their win and that is always the key to beating the Hawks. Take Boston.
TOR Raptors -8.0BKN Nets @ TOR Raptors : The Nets and Raptors run it back after last night’s 133-97 win for Toronto win at the Barclays Center. This time the game is being played in Canada and that means no Kyrie Irving again for Brooklyn. Last night’s game was pretty much over after the first 12 minutes as the Nets allowed 42 points while scoring only 27. The high point man for Brooklyn in the loss was LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 15 points off the bench. Newly acquired Seth Curry had just 11 on 1-for-8 shooting. The Nets have been relying on him in some games without their big 3, but it looks like the honeymoon is over and the Nets are set to struggle once again.
Fred VanVleet didn’t play because of a sore right knee, but that didn’t bother the Raptors last night as they got 28 points from Scottie Barnes, while Precious Achiuwa contributed with 20 off the bench. Leading scorer Pascal Siakam had only 8 on the night, but that wasn’t an issue, which is concerning if you are a Brooklyn fan. VanVleet could miss tonight’s game as well, but Toronto could get OG Anunoby back from a finger injury. Even without both of those players, I’m still going with Toronto as they’ve beaten the Nets 13 times in the last 15 home games, and they’ve covered the spread in 7 of their last 9 games against Eastern Conference opponents. Brooklyn’s numbers tell the whole story – they are just 3-14 SU in their last 17 games, they’ve lost 6 of 8 against Eastern Conference opponents and they are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 against Toronto. Until the big 3 are back, I would hold off on backing them. Go with the home team.
LA Clippers -7.0LA Clippers @ HOU Rockets : The LA Clippers continue their playoff push as they travel to Houston to face the struggling Rockets. Houston has lost 9 in a row by an average of 16.3 points and covered just twice during that span. The Rockets are also a paltry 7-29 straight up against the Western Conference. The Clippers have won and covered in 5 of their last 6 games, but did not cover 2 nights ago against Houston, when winning 99-98. While the Clippers will still be without Paul George, the Rockets will likely be without Kevin Porter Jr., who didn’t play in the meeting on February 27. Houston is also the worst rebounding team in the NBA.
Houston is just 7-16 ATS this season as a home dog and 15-20-1 ATS against the Western Conference. The Rockets allow the most points per game of any team in the NBA at 117.8 and are giving up 122.3 over their last 10. The Clippers are back above .500 for the first time since January 9 and still fighting to get above the 7th seed in the West to avoid the play-in tournament. I’ll give the edge to LA as these teams just played a low-scoring affair and they shouldn’t get caught napping in back-to-back games against the worst defense in the league.
